Adrienne Washington, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor of Linguistics

Dr. Washington completed her B.A. in Spanish with a minor in English Arts at Hampton University. She earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in Linguistics with a concentration in Sociolinguistics and the Doctoral Level Certificate in African Studies and the Advanced Study Certificate for Latin American & Caribbean Studies at the University of Pittsburgh.

Her research program in sociocultural linguistics explores the social use of language among intersectional communities in different locations of the African diaspora, including the eastern US and northeastern Brazil, as they negotiate meaning and make sense of their experiences. Dr. Washington teaches courses in linguistics, research methods, and culture at WVU.
