Placement Exams
Correct placement in a language class can help you graduate earlier, save on tuition payments and boost your resume with second language certification. Placement may also help you get a head start on a World Languages minor and expand your study abroad opportunities.
Heritage Speakers
The department recognizes that our diverse student body brings varying levels of knowledge and skills in different language. We would like to help you build on and develop what you already know. Appropriate placement in your heritage language is essential and can help streamline your undergraduate education.
Students with previous experience in the target language, like all students who register for Frenchnand Spanish, must take the departmental placement examination.
If you are a heritage speaker, we strongly recommend that you meet with the appropriate language coordinator before registering for a language class. This meeting will ensure that you are placed in the best class to maximize your potential.
If you are placed in a level above 101, you may be eligible to receive free back
credit. Please see the coordinator for that language for more details.
If you are a native speaker, then please contact the Office of Academic Affairs in Eberly College to discuss the possibility of a Foreign Language Waiver.
